  31. Well around Febuary of this year there was much talk about a US Robot-
  32. ics COURIER HST, with a new speed mode. There were some lame texts coming out
  33. that explained shit! So I went on a quest, I called USR, talked to techies,
  34. talked to some dudez that heard these rumors, and logged on various boards
  35. gathering information. So here it, all in a very big text file. But at least
  36. I'm sure it'll answer all your questions on the new HST's. Also another note
  37. is that these NEW HST's are the same price.

  40. Ok the NEW USRobotics COURIER HST with v.42 & v.42bis is available
  41. as of March 1992. The prices haven't changed, and special sysop deals can let
  42. you have the fastest modem in the world for only $399!!

  44. That's right! The new HST has (this is according to rumor) a 88c188
  45. processor running at 33mhz. Speeds supported are: 300,1200,2400,4800,7800,
  46. 9600,12200,14400, & 16800. The new modem can be locked at 57,600baud, this is
  47. also a new feature. The modem is 2 inches smaller, and has a nicer design.
  48. SYNCHRONOUS transmission has been stepped up from 450bps on the back channel to
  49. 1200bps. Many new commands are installed, also a v.54 link diagnostics, many
  50. testing routines, and special commands for UNIX users. More ATI? commands.
  51. Special expansion for the future is built in (Like the when IBM came out, and
  52. was built for expanding).

  54. Well in my opinion this is the most impressive piece of computer
  55. hardware ever built. This modem is worth it's weight in gold, and I've already
  56. ordered one. I also have a sneaking suspicion that anyone who is anyone will
  57. have one of these. It's like when the 14.4kbps replaced the 9,600kpbs. This
  58. will replace the 1440, and boards (that are always busy) will soon only
  59. support 19200 to 57,600 baud only, and 9600 will be dead. Well, all can say,
  60. is try to order one of these as soon as possible, because they are selling
  61. fast (there is already a waiting list, according to a USR Representative).

  63. I made mention a month or so ago of some new products forthcoming from
  64. the folks in Skokie.  I can now give you the details.

  66. There has been some concern amongst the end-Users who had invested in
  67. the HST-14.4 protocol that USR had abandoned them in favor of the new
  68. v.32bis standard.  Not true!

  70. US Robotics strikes again with a new HST-14.4 protocol!!  Beginning
  71. immediately (product is already in the pipeline), the new HST-14.4 wil
  72. now support transfers at 16,800.                      ^^^

  74. The new Dual Standards will also support 16,800 on the HST side.

  76.  It is important that everybody understands that the 16,800 can only be
  77.  accomplished between the NEW HST-14.4 and DS Modems.  There is NO
  78.  UPgrade Path nor is one planned!  ie: if you have a earlier version
  79.  (meaning any unit shipped prior to 2/1/92) of the 14.4 or DS the
  80.  maxim connect to the NEW models will be 14,400.

  82. All prices at the Retail Level and the various Demo programs will remain
  83. the same....no increases anticipated.

  88.   NOTE: My comment to it is, I as a HST owner/user am again left on
  89.   the outside with no up-grade path possible.  It may lengthen the
  90.   life of HST and add to USR bottom line but how about current owners!
  91.   I feel sold out with no support from USR!  Again sell the old and
  92.   buy a new one from USR.
